Bariatric Surgery
Objectives
This DIU is offered by the University of Strasbourg in partnership with the universities of Lille, Nantes, Paris, and Montpellier.
*Curriculum only available in French.
Its aim is to provide rigorous training for digestive surgeons in bariatric surgery and endoscopy.
It covers all aspects of obesity surgery and its future prospects, enabling students to acquire knowledge about the comprehensive pre- and post-operative care of obese patients seeking surgical treatment for their obesity.
At the end of the program, students will be able to:
- provide preoperative care for obese patients
- implement the various techniques of bariatric surgery (benefits and risks)
- understand the role of endoscopic treatments in the care of obese patients
- provide postoperative follow-up for patients who have undergone obesity surgery
- act quickly in the event of complications
Course structure
The training program lasts two years and consists of five two-day seminars (90 hours):
The seminars are accompanied by an eight-day internship (32 hours). The observership bring together a maximum of six people in surgical departments specializing in obesity surgery.
Audience
The continuing education program is open to:
- Practicing surgeons (private practice, public practice)
- Doctors whose specialty involves treating obese patients (anesthesiologists, endocrinologists, nutritionists, gastroenterologists, pulmonologists, cardiologists, etc.)
Initial training is open to:
- Postgraduate students enrolled in DES (specialized studies diploma) in general surgery or DESC (specialized studies diploma in clinical surgery) in digestive surgery
- Students enrolled in DFMS/A (specialized studies diploma in medical surgery)
- Residents
French-speaking candidates, as the program and exam will be in French.
Capacity
Total: 100 places spread across the five centers (maximum of 20 places in Strasbourg)
Program
First year of the DIU:
- 1st seminar in Nantes: Therapeutic indications and concepts of bariatric surgery
- 2nd seminar in Paris: Restrictive surgical procedures
- 3rd seminar in Montpellier: Complex procedures
2nd year of the DIU:
- 4th seminar in Strasbourg: Bariatric endoscopy
- 5th seminar in Lille: Follow-up of obese patients who have undergone surgery + Final exam
Recruitment
Candidates are selected on the basis of an application file containing the following items:
- a cover letter
- one or more supporting documents required for admission to the program
- a resume
Applications are reviewed by the program’s academic directors, who has sole authority to approve enrollment.
