A look back at the latest ITEC 2024 course: Immersion at the heart of innovation in therapeutic echo-endoscopy

The 2024 edition of the ITEC courses draws to a close!

From December 4 to 6, 2024, IHU Strasbourg organized the 16th edition of its flagship course, the International Therapeutic Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS). Over three days, 18 participants, including doctors, nurses and assistants, plunged into the heart of advanced therapeutic echo-endoscopy. Under the guidance of echo-endoscopy expert Dr. Leonardo Sosa Valencia, this unique program combining theory, intensive hands-on practice and mentoring by international experts is a must for practitioners wishing to strengthen their skills.

Training that combines expertise, technology and clinical realism

The aim of the ITEC course is clear: to provide cutting-edge training that will push back the boundaries of therapeutic echo-endoscopy.

During this session, participants, guided by course director Dr. Leonardo Sosa Valencia and a panel of international experts including Abdenor Badaoui, Jérôme Huppertz, Pierre Deprez, Pedro Moutinho-Ribeiro, Enrique Pérez-Cuadrado-Robles and Pierre-Yves Christmann, benefited from:

  • Over 14 hours of intensive practice on High-Fidelity Simulated Animal models (HiFiSAM*) developed at IHU Strasbourg, reproducing complex clinical scenarios (multiple intra-abdominal collections, biliary dilatations, lymph nod).
  • Immersion in a cutting edge environment thanks to state-of-the-art echo-endoscopy equipment provided by Pentax, and to a multimodal imaging platform (CT scanner, angio-CT, C-ARM).

The topics covered included complex procedures such as:

  • Gastrocystostomy,
  • Radiofrequency ablation,
  • Echo-guided biliary drainage,
  • Neurolysis of the celiac ganglia,
  • Portal pressure measurement,
  • Digestive anastomoses…

Each participant benefited from personalized follow-up, enabling them to perfect their gestures under conditions similar to real-life clinical situations.

Experience validated by the UEG and supported by our industrial partners

ITEC course is supported endorsed by the UEG (United European Gastroenterology) and follows the 2024 recommendations of the ESGE (European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy), ensuring a high level of excellence.

Inauguration of iGlobe Scientific: A revolution in the early detection of pancreatic cancer

Inauguration of iGlobe Scientific: A revolution in the early detection of pancreatic cancer

On November 25, 2024, IHU Strasbourg and Medi-Globe Technologies GmbH inaugurated iGlobe Scientific, an innovative Joint Venture dedicated to the fight against pancreatic cancer. Thanks to Artificial Intelligence (AI), this ambitious project promises to transform the early diagnosis of this disease, offering new hope to patients and clinicians alike

iGlobe Scientific

A public health emergency: earlier detection to save more lives

With over 14,000 new cases and 11,500 deaths every year in France, pancreatic cancer remains one of the most feared cancers. Its late diagnosis considerably reduces the chances of survival, surgery being the only curative treatment at an early stage. iGlobe Scientific intends to respond to this emergency with real-time AI technology, designed to assist gastroenterologists during echo-endoscopy examinations, essential for detecting early lesions.

Pioneering technological advances

Under the leadership of Dr. Leonardo Sosa-Valencia of the IHU Strasbourg, the APEUS-IA project marked a key milestone. In partnership with the CAMMA  (Computational Analysis and Modeling of Medical Activities) team at the University of Strasbourg, AI-based prototypes have already been validated in real-life conditions, offering reliable assistance in identifying pancreatic lesions.

An ecosystem conducive to innovation

Based in Strasbourg, iGlobe Scientific benefits from an exceptional environment. Supported by the Region Grand Est, the Eurométropole de Strasbourg and players such as Grand E-Nov+ and ADIRA, the Joint Venture benefits from the strategic proximity of the Nextmed Medical Technology Campus, a cluster dedicated to medical technologies.

Professor Christian Debry, General Director of the IHU Strasbourg, comments: “The integration of iGlobe Scientific within the IHU strengthens the synergy between our research, innovation and clinical teams. Strasbourg, with its Nextmed campus, is an ideal breeding ground for the development of cutting-edge solutions.”

Dr. Markus Schönberger, Director of Business Development at Medi-Globe, adds, “We chose Strasbourg for its clinical excellence, its dynamic AI ecosystem and its pool of innovative talent.”

Concrete benefits for patients

Echo-endoscopy is a complex but crucial technique for detecting early signs of pancreatic cancer. With iGlobe Scientific, clinicians will have a real-time digital assistant at their disposal, improving the accuracy of diagnoses and increasing the chances of rapid and appropriate management.

A project supported by major institutions

This innovative project was made possible thanks to €772,000 in funding from the ARC Fondation for cancer research and the involvement of regional partners. François Dupré, Managing Director of the ARC Foundation, emphasizes, “Supporting initiatives like APEUS-IA is essential to improving early cancer detection and saving lives.”

Towards a promising future

With iGlobe Scientific, IHU Strasbourg and Medi-Globe are paving the way for precision medicine, where early detection becomes accessible, enabling better-adapted and, ultimately, more curative treatments. This initiative marks a decisive step forward in the fight against cancer, for the benefit of patients and clinicians alike.

Innovation and creativity: A look back at the B.E.S.T. 2024 course

Innovation and creativity: A look back at the B.E.S.T. 2024 course

Last week, the B.E.S.T. (Business Engineering and Surgical Technologies) course at IHU Strasbourg once again asserted its originality. Launched in 2012, B.E.S.T aims to awaken vocations for innovators and entrepreneurs in Healthcare. This intensive one-week bootcamp brought together 24 participants of 9 nationalities from diverse backgrounds – doctors, surgeons, engineers and researchers – offering them an exceptional immersion in innovation and creativity.

Prof. Silvana Perretta, internationally renowned surgeon and Director of Education at IHU Strasbourg, is the driving force behind the B.E.S.T. program. Her exemplary career path, rare for a woman at this level of responsibility, makes her a source of inspiration for students and peers alike. Under her leadership, the B.E.S.T. course has become a veritable laboratory of innovative ideas, stimulating creativity and encouraging the emergence of medical solutions for tomorrow. The program offers participants intensive immersion in key areas of medical innovation, through engineering and entrepreneurship workshops, as well as hands-on surgical experience. Teaching is provided by international experts, including renowned entrepreneurs from the technical, medical and commercial sectors.

The 2024 edition took on a whole new dimension thanks to the participation of painter and visual artist Laure Krug, who led a unique collaborative artistic performance over four days. Together, students, surgeons and the artist combined their talents to create a work of art from materials recovered from the operating theatre.

Prof. Silvana Perretta commented: “Surgery, like art, is a field where precision, creativity and innovation are paramount. Working in collaboration with an artist like Laure Krug has enabled our students to rethink their practices from a new angle, while raising their awareness of crucial issues such as ecology and sustainability, and reinforcing the importance of knowledge transmission.”

📺 France 3 Alsace recently produced a report on this unique event. This report offers a glimpse of this extraordinary performance, illustrating the encounter between art and science at the IHU Strasbourg (10min27):
